Jan Temme de Vries (subproject 1) is back from a visiting research stay at the Centre for Privacy Studies, University of Copenhagen, 15 September – 15 December 2025

During this period, he gained valuable insights into concepts and expressions of Early Modern privacy in general and brought fresh ideas back to his own research. More specifically, he worked on German-Danish practices of nocturnal piety as manifested in devotional music written for domestic settings. For this, he gratefully made use of the vast archival material preserved at the Royal Library.

The visit also offered an excellent opportunity for intensive scholarly exchange and networking with colleagues on site, broadening perspectives and opening up new approaches to interdisciplinary work. With insights from various fields such as architecture, theology, law, and Early Modern history, nocturnal devotional musicking can now be situated in a holistic understanding of its overall Sitz im Leben. The research stay ended with a presentation of the main research results at the international conference “The Night as a Private Space” on 11—12 December 2025. We warmly thank the University of Copenhagen and the Centre for Privacy Studies for their kind hospitality and the inspiring collaboration.
