Representing NightMuse: Jan Temme de Vries in Oxford

On 6 March 2026, Jan Temme de Vries (subproject 1) participated in the international conference Music, Theology and Time at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford.

He presented a paper titled ‘Keep me innocent: The Night as Time of Existential Self-Examination as Showcased in the Hymnal of Caroline Mathilde’. The presentation focused on the fate of the young Danish queen Caroline Mathilde in the spring of 1772, and on how night is portrayed in her hymnal as a time of ethical reflection. The hymn Selvprøvelse om Aftenen, a translation of Christian Fürchtegott Gellert's Prüfung am Abend, conveys a moral rigour that is reinforced by the compositional structure in several settings by, among others, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Heinrich Rolle.

The presentation was well received by the international community of musicologists and theologians. In particular, the methodological nuances in combining textual and musical analysis attracted considerable interest.
