Representing NightMuse: Jonathan Stark (subproject 3) at EuroMAC 11 in Barcelona

From 7 to 10 September 2026, Jonathan Stark (subproject 3) took part in the 11th European Music Analysis Conference (EuroMAC 11) at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona.

In his paper “Integrating Grounded Theory into the Music-Analytical Workflow”, he presented an interdisciplinary approach to dealing with the “selection dilemma” that arises when analysing large-scale music-theatrical corpora. He suggested a two-stage process that employs Grounded Theory – a social science methodology – as a heuristic for coding non-musical indicators like plot, character and setting in opera libretti in order to identify points of analytical interest.

The presentation sparked a discussion about the interdisciplinarity of the field of music analysis and about possibilities for automation using artificial intelligence.
